We Talked to 40 NJ Homeowners About Door Repairs — Most Didn't Know a Misaligned Door is a Security Risk

We surveyed door repair customers across Bergen, Monmouth, Union, and Hudson counties in New Jersey, asking a simple question after each job: "Were you aware that a misaligned door affects your home security?" Fewer than 15% said yes. The rest had thought of misalignment as a convenience problem — annoying, but not urgent. The reality is more serious.

Why Misalignment Affects Security

A deadbolt is only as effective as the alignment between the bolt and the strike plate. When a door shifts — from seasonal wood movement, hinge wear, or frame settling common in NJ's older housing stock — the deadbolt no longer seats fully into the strike plate. An incompletely seated deadbolt in a New Jersey home can sometimes be bypassed with a credit card or by applying lateral pressure to the door — the bolt slides back because it's sitting in the strike plate opening at an angle rather than fully seated.

This isn't theoretical. It's the same vulnerability that affects nearly every door in NJ homes where owners report "the deadbolt is a little stiff" without investigating why.

The Fix Is the Same as the Dragging Fix

The repair for the security problem is identical to the repair for the functional problem: hinge adjustment, frame realignment, and strike plate repositioning. Affordable door repair in New Jersey that addresses the alignment also restores the security. Homeowners in our survey who'd delayed the repair for months — assuming it was cosmetic — were often surprised that the security issue was resolved by the same visit.

Exterior vs. Interior Doors

Security-related misalignment matters most on exterior doors — front entry, back door, garage entry door, and basement entry in NJ homes. Interior door misalignment is mostly a functional annoyance. We prioritize exterior door assessments on every door repair call in New Jersey and flag any misalignment that affects deadbolt engagement, regardless of whether that was the original call reason.

If your NJ exterior door requires extra force to close or the deadbolt feels stiff, it's worth scheduling an assessment. The security risk is real, and the fix is typically one of the cheaper door repairs in New Jersey — under $100 in most cases.
